Double Sun (2020) Plastics, Perspex, LED Lights

Plastics and acrylic pieces are iconic materials commonly used in the 1980s, the most iconic era of Hong Kong with booming economy and hustle and bustle lifestyle, a time that helped to build our city as it is today. Our city is a place that never sleeps; it is as though we are living under two suns: with sunlight casting shadows of the city silhouette on the ground during daytime, and neon lights projecting colourful reflections on the streets at night. Pieces of quadrilateral perspex and plastics are assembled and installed from the ceiling, while the “Double Sun” traces the colours and imprints of this fast-paced city.

The artist casts the silhouettes of Hong Kong skylines on the wall by projecting lights onto manufactured objects. Hair rollers, stationeries, plastic toys…these nostalgic objects represent the heyday of Hong Kong’s manufacturing industries in the 1960s. Through lights and shadows, each diorama is a historical record of Hong Kong people’s perseverance; and each object tells a unique story of the old family-owned stores from where it belongs.

Artrist Introduction

Ms Angela Yuen - Angela Yuen is a Hong Kong young artist who was shortlisted in the Sovereign Asian Art Prize and the Pingyao International Sculpture Festival. Her works have also been exhibited in Hong Kong, Beijing, Melbourne and other cities.
